CD 101 – Child Growth and Development                                                                            3 units

This course is the study of human growth from conception through middle childhood including the areas of physical, cognitive, social and emotional development. Historical and contemporary developmental theories are explored to deepen the understanding of young children. The role of this knowledge as it applies to curriculum planning is emphasized. This course meets the requirements for Title 22 regulations and may also be used to meet the professional early childhood education requirement for the Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential.

Instruction Hours:  Lecture 16 hours; Independent Study 34 hours; Externship 40 hours                         Length of Course:  Two weeks

 

CD 102 – Child, Family and Community                                                                              3 units

This course examines the effect of family, school, peer group and community influences on a young child’s socialization.  Emphasis is placed on the influence of the family and how early childhood educators can support families in their child’s development. This course meets the requirements for Title 22 regulations and may also be used to meet the professional early childhood education requirement for the Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential.

CD 103 – Early Childhood Curriculum                                                                                3 units

This course is an introduction to developmentally appropriate curriculum in the preschool classroom. Students are trained how to provide a learning environment that is integrated, diverse, age-appropriate, and fosters growth in all areas of the child’s development. This course meets the requirements for Title 22 regulations and may also be used to meet the professional early childhood education requirement for the Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential.

CD 104 – Health, Safety and Nutrition of Young Children                                                     3 units

This course is a study of strategies and practices that promote the health, safety,    and well-being of children in early childhood programs.  It includes state regulations, national guidelines and working with families to support a learning environment for young children. This course may be used to meet part of the professional early childhood education requirement for the Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential.

CD 105 – Introduction to Early Childhood Education                                                        3 units

Prerequisite course:                 CD 101 – Child Growth and Development

This course is a study of the historical development of Early Childhood Education programs.  It explores current program models for young children including public, private and special needs.  The critical role of the teacher in the learning environment is emphasized. This course may be used to meet the professional early childhood education requirement for the Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential.

CD 106 – Child Guidance and Discipline                                                                         3 units

Prerequisite course:       CD 101 – Child Growth and Development

This course is a study of child guidance and discipline from a child development   point of view.  Different guidance approaches are explored from the prospective of the child’s moral and social development.  The course includes training in planning curriculum and creating environments that prevent discipline issues in the classroom.  This course may be used to meet part of the professional early childhood education requirement for the Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential.
